Murzan is the industry leader in sanitary processing equipment. In 1983 Murzan developed the first oil-free, air-operated sanitary pump: the PI-50. The PI-50 has since remained the industry standard in sanitary diaphragm pumps. Today Murzan manufactures a wide variety of sanitary unloading systems, as well as larger processing systems for the food industry.

During my time as an engineer at Murzan, I began a side project to design and develop a new company website. The published website can be seen at www.murzan.com

Below are some screenshots of the old website.

Basically, it was one of your standard 2010-era WordPress themes. The menu layout drove me nuts. Menus and sub-menus and pages within pages with duplicated information. The website layout was like a supermarket floorplan, forcing you to walk across every corner of the store just to get the basics. So, I began by re-thinking the entire layout, using my knowledge of what Murzan products were, how they were made, and how they were used. I created a website layout that tailored to Murzan’s products and expertise.

I drew on inspiration from old VW & Porsche ads, George Lois’ marketing audacity, Apple’s minimal aesthetic and Charles & Ray Eames’ playful graphic style. Admittedly, this was still a website for sanitary diaphragm pumps used in food plants, so not as sexy as Apple products or a Porsche 911. Nevertheless, I wanted to convey the quality of Murzan products with as much impact and simplicity as possible.

The final website was created from scratch using Webflow. This allowed me to rapidly create the foundation of the website, but then implement custom code easily where I wanted to have unique animations and interactions. Shown below are some screenshots of the website as released in 2019. (Most of the photos on the website were taken and/or edited by me as well. But that’s a whole different story.)
